Chapter Thirteen – Connor

Will and I manage to sneak in a super quick shower, sadly without any additional exploration of each other’s bodies, and get dressed before Vicky starts to stir from her nap. As though choreographed, Will heads out into the kitchen to sort out a bottle while I head into the nursery to scoop the baby up and get her changed. I frown when I feel that her skin feels a little warm again, and I glance at the clock, glad that she’s booked in to see the doctor in a couple of hours’ time.

She’s fussy and whiny when I carry her out into the main living space of the apartment, and Will hands over the bottle without needing to be asked.

I still can’t believe the changes that have taken place today. When I woke up, I was still convinced that he would never want me. Not with Vicky in the picture. Not with knowing that I can’t do casual flings anymore. Not with knowing that anything between us will have to get serious fast.

But here we are. I haven’t scared him away. I haven’t freaked him out with the declarations of my feelings or my intentions for a future with him. Instead, it only seemed to bring us closer.

Obviously, we still need to talk about where we’re going to go from here. We need to talk about what my idea of ‘serious’ is, and whether his idea matches up with it. We need to talk about how now seems to be the perfect time to trial a relationship, while Vicky doesn’t actually know what’s going on and before she can get too attached, just in case he doesn’t want to do the stepparent thing after all.

We need to talk about the fact that I might already be too attached to him anyway.

We need to talk about how fucking mind-blowing the sex between us was, because hot damn do we have chemistry!

And, oh yeah, we should probably actually talk about whether he is okay with dating someone his sons’ age. I mean, he might be alright with it, but will they? I don’t want to come between him and the boys (men, I correct myself, because I am only three years their senior) he loves so much.

I don’t have a problem with our age gap. Sixteen years doesn’t really seem like a lot now that I’m in my thirties. It’s not even a topic that comes up all that often, because we have similar interests and conversation flows easily between us. But I still understand that some people might look at us with raised eyebrows and concern.

Some people like his sons.

His sons who I have never met.

Well, no, I think I met Jack -the one he works with- the night of Daisy’s accident, but I am not counting that for obvious reasons.

From all the stories Will has told me, Jack and Wes sound like great guys. They sound like the sorts of people I’d get along with socially. Well, you know, if I wasn’t fucking their dad.
